(Order reference 2760).
Over the last ten years, embroidery has developed from a decorative
craft interest to a serious subject of study. At the same time, teaching
embroidery has moved from the application of a narrow concern with technique
to the encouragement of a creative and expressive art-form enjoyed by people
of all ages and abilities.
NEEDLEWORK SCHOOL has been designed as a practical first course in the skills
and techniques of embroidery with special emphasis on design and colour.
The authors of this book are members of a teaching group with more than
ten years' experience of working with pupils at all levels, from the beginner
to the fine arts or college student. Fully illustrated with over 700 photographs
and step-by-step diagrams, NEEDLEWORK SCHOOL shows the reader how to progress
from simple to complicated stitches, gradually developing a range of skills
which will allow an increased freedom of personal expression. The book deals
with all the major categories of the embroiderer's craft, from traditional
stumpwork to machine embroidery. A special section at the end of the book
lays the ground for more creative work through detailed study of actual
projects created by the authors. At every stage, a wealth of information
is provided by materials and techniques, together with positive suggestions
for project development.

Valerie Campbell-Harding’s stunning book is packed full with
exciting and innovative ideas for machine embroidery.
The sewing machine's potential for creative use is enormous. Even the most
basic machine has a zig-zag facility and many decorative effects can be
achieved just using this and the other practical stitches. Machine Embroidery:
Stitched Patterns opens with an accessible chapter on the basics how to
use the machine plus essential information on needles, thread, feet and
stabilizers. The next chapter looks at using the basic stitch patterns combining,
altering and distorting them to achieve unique effects. Valerie Campbell-Harding
then explores combining these patterns with different embroidery techniques
hand stitching, quilting, applique, free machine embroidery — using
a versatile range of fabrics and threads. Stitching and slashing, quilting
with patterns, decorating a fabric, machine-wrapped cords, stitched thread
braids and woven patterns are just some of the exciting ideas.
Valerie Campbell-Harding then looks at using larger patterns in machine
embroidery working with different sizes, decorating fabric and adding further
embroidery. For those with more sophisticated machines, there is a chapter
on experimenting with scanned patterns which gives guidance on what to scan,
how to stitch and how to develop the design further. The Gallery, with a
collection of finished pieces using the techniques illustrated in the book,
will inspire embroiderers to start machining straight away.
With over 80 colourful photographs and 75 line illustrations, Machine Embroidery:
Stitched Patterns encourages the embroiderer to maximize the potential of
the sewing machine and to experiment creatively with stitch patterns in
new and innovative ways. |

Crabtree,
Caroline: World Embroidery - 25 original
projects from traditional designs
David & Charles 1st 1993
large 4to M/F 910 gms
(Order reference 5124).
Landscape
is a fruitful source of inspiration for embroidery, but the enormous range
of possibilities may make it difficult to decide on subject, interpretation
and technique. Verina Warren is well known for her sensitive landscape
embroideries, and in this book she offers practical approaches to design
which will help the reader achieve striking, visually effective results.
The
first chapter suggests ways of finding a suitable subject for the design,
using both sketching and photography. The author goes on to demonstrate
how to translate the subject into embroidery, with advice on technical
points such as perspective, horizon lines and focal points. A chapter
on colour shows its importance in creating atmosphere and seasonal effects.
Techniques are also covered, in particular machine embroidery and spraying
and painting backgrounds, as well as mounting and finishing. Finally,
Verina explains the stages of one of her own embroidered landscapes, with
details of every step from the first sketches through to the finished
work.
This
carefully planned and thoughtfully illustrated book will bring successful
landscape designs within the reach of every embroiderer.

small 4to, glazed pictorial boards, name + date to front free endpaper verso
o/w F 430 gms
(Order reference 7948).
Most keen embroiderers, cross-stitchers and sampler-makers attempt
to keep a record of the thread they buy, the designs they like — motifs
they often use over and over again — or of patterns seen in a museum
or at a friend's house. It is also useful to keep track of pieces of embroidery
made and given as special presents to friends and relatives. But lists,
loose notes and sketches are easily lost. At
last, there is a practical and attractive way to store all this information,
and much else besides. The Sampler Workbook is a personal needlecraft
book, enabling embroiderers to prepare their own charts on graph paper
and build up a repertoire of old, new and personal designs. It also contains
a wealth of invaluable tips, many charted original designs by Jane Greenoff,
a thread exchange list, information on the different types of embroidery
cloth and canvas available, and several specially designed sections in
which the owner of the book can keep systematic personal needlecraft records.
The workbook is charmingly illustrated with pictures of antique samplers
and of modern ones, specially made by the author. This workbook has been
devised for practical use, in the truest sense of the word.
Samplers
have been taken as the theme for this book because for centuries they
were the way to practise and keep patterns of embroidered motifs and alphabets.
The sampler has an almost universal tradition and these personalized needlecraft
records of yesteryear are much admired and collected today for their decorative
value. Embroiderers everywhere are keen to copy the old designs, or to
create their own, producing samplers for their own sake, as pictures.

you can create your own original and personal embroidery designs.
Jan
Messent simplifies the process, proving that anyone can do it. In each
chapter, she discusses in an accessible, humorous way different sources
of ideas ~ word associations, colour, symbols, music and the human form
~ and demonstrates how these ideas can be developed into embroidery. She
also looks at the way in which techniques, fabrics and stitches complement
an embroidery design. Colour photographs, showing Jan's work and that
of other leading embroiderers from around the world, plus a wealth of
practical drawings, will help you to design with confidence.
Jan
Messent's World of Embroidery will bring your creative talents to life;
your design ideas will be quickly turned into exciting embroidery.

George Allen & Unwin 1st 1972
4to, very minor creasing to dustwrapper edges o/w VG++/VG++ 815 gms

If
you imagine that canvas embroidery is simply a matter of repeating the
same stitch over and over again, with threads of identical thickness ~
think again. In this very practical and down~to~earth book, the authors
show how this traditional needlecraft can, be used to create exciting
and innovative designs.
The
basic skills and stitches are all described in detail and are demonstrated
with clear step~by~step drawings and photographs; but these simple, techniques
can very readily be adapted to more unusual embroideries, combining a
wide range of threads and easy~to~use dyes.
Whether
you have any artistic training or not, you wiIl find that the techniques
explained here will make it easy to create your own designs, tailored
to suit your taste, your surroundings and your lifestyle.

Conran Octopus rep 1996
large 4to, very minor wrinkling to d/w edges o/w VG++/VG++ 890 gms
(Order reference 14877).
Combining
her considerable talents and infectious enthusiasm for William Morris,
Beth Russell has adapted a number of his most beautiful designs to create
an original needlepoint collection for the home. Morris was probably
the most prolific and talented designer that the nineteenth century
ever witnessed. Inspired by the natural world around him, he produced
a wealth of designs for embroideries, tapestries and wallpapers. Beth
Russell's needlepoint projects are a unique interpretation of this work
and pay due homage to his creative genius.
Most
of these projects are worked in tent stitch for canvas and the accompanying
colour charts enable the reader to follow the instructions with ease.
All the materials needed for each project are indicated, including the
amount of yarn to buy and advice is given in stitching and finishing
off.
Leading
still-life photographer Jan Baldwin has photographed each of the projects,
which include cushions, rugs, wall-hangings and fire-screens, in evocative
medieval and Arts & Crafts locations. Her sensitive styling attunes
perfectly with the author's designs, which in turn complement the archival
photographs of Morris's own work, his sources of inspiration and the
work of his contemporaries.

Snook, Barbara:
Embroidery Designs from the Sea
Dryad Press 1st thus 1986
4to, glazed pictorial boards VG++ 395 gms
(Order reference 5937).
The sea and the sea shore have always been a rich source of inspiration
for craftsmen, whatever the medium in which they work. Here, Barbara Snook
presents a portfolio of interpretive sketches and designs inspired by the
sea especially for the embroiderer to follow and adopt. Advances in photography
have meant that many more people can now study the shapes and intricacies
of much marine life, but Barbara Snook goes further in that she provides
guidance specifically to transfer such forms to on embroidered work. She
presents a cross-section of marine life from the seas and shores of Great
Britain, the United States and Australia and New Zealand. In so doing she
has produced a book both inspirational and informative.
Barbara Snook was for many years Senior Art Teacher at Chislehurst Grammar
School. Kent and established herself as a .leading embroiderer and teacher.
She was the author of many books, most of which were published by Batsford
and have now been republished by Dryad Press. 96

Swain, Margaret:
Figures on Fabric - embroidery design sources and their application
A & C Black 1st 1980
4to, F/VG++ 500 gms
(Order reference 13255).
Figures on Fabric is the first book to examine the origins of designs
chosen for embroidery. It provides answers to the fascinating question 'Where
did artists, pattern drawers and talented amateur needlewomen like Mary
Queen of Scots find their inspiration?' The author traces numerous designs
to their printed sources among Bible illustrations, theatrical prints, books
of natural history and classical mythology, as well as pattern books end
magazine inserts. Many
of the pieces illustrated come from private or foreign collections, and
are shown with the woodcuts or engravings from which they derive. The
traditional methods of transferring these designs to the fabric are also
described and illustrated.
The
book contains full references for further reading, and will be particularly
valuable for art students and others engaged in textile studies, museum
curators and collectors. For the general reader it gives a fascinating
background to the many handsome pieces of needlework still surviving in
churches, museums and historic houses, while the amateur needlewoman will
find in it the answer to some of the problems of transferring her ideas
on to cloth using modern aids.
The
jacket illustration is from a needlework screen worked by Julia, Lady
Calverley, at Wallington Hall, Northumberland, a property of the National
Trust

Warren,
Verina: Landscape in Embroidery
B T Batsford reprint 1987
4to, small inscription to front free endpaper o/w VG++/VG++ 635 gms
(Order reference 7219).
Landscape
is a fruitful source of inspiration for embroidery, but the enormous range
of possibilities may make it difficult to decide on subject, interpretation
and technique.
