Stories
About Not Being Afraid of Ghosts
Foreign Language Press Peking 2nd edn 1979
pb 92pp, small split to cvr at btm of sp o/w VG+ 135 gms
(Order reference 5405).
This book includes thirty-five stories about not
being afraid of ghosts, which are taken from ancient Chinese collections
of tales and anecdotes. They show the adroitness and courage of Chinese
people in ancient times who dared to defy ghosts. Today, everyone knows
there are no such things as ghosts. But while there are no demons like
those described in these tales, there are many things which resemble them
-- imperialism, reactionaries, difficulties and obstacles in work, for
example. These stories, therefore, may be considered in the nature of
allegories and satires. |

Redgauntlet (1824) is a historical novel by Sir Walter Scott,
set in Dumfries, Scotland in 1765, and described by Magnus Magnusson (a
point first made by Andrew Lang) as "in a sense, the most autobiographical
of Scott's novels." It describes the beginnings of a fictional third
Jacobite Rebellion, and includes "Wandering Willie's Tale",
a famous short story which frequently appears in anthologies.

(Order reference 13683).
An 1857 novel by Thomas Hughes. The story is set at Rugby School,
a public school for boys, in the 1830s; Hughes attended Rugby School from
1834 to 1842. The novel has been the source for several film and television
adaptations.
The
novel was originally published as being "by an Old Boy of Rugby",
and much of it is based on the author's experiences. Tom Brown is largely
based on the author's brother, George Hughes and the fictional Tom's life
also resembles the author's in that the culminating event of his school
career was a cricket match.
Tom
Brown's School Days was tremendously influential on the genre of British
school novels, which began in the 19th century, and led to Billy Bunter's
Greyfriars School, Mr Chips' Brookfield, St. Trinian's, and Hogwarts.
It is one of the few still in print from its time. A sequel, Tom Brown
at Oxford, was published in 1861 but is not as well known.
Tom's
principal enemy at Rugby is the bully Flashman. The 20th-century writer
George MacDonald Fraser featured the grown-up Flashman in a series of
successful historical novels.

The story focuses on three characters: Arthur Dent,
the perenially confused Briton; Ford Prefect, the manic Betelgeusian;
and Tricia McMillan, a BBC television reporter who, had she decided not
to go back to get her purse when she met "Phil" at a party,
would have become Trillian. Adams presents Dent as a wonderfully tragic
picture, and mirrors the beginning of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to
the Galaxy" quite well. Dent is presented as a lost soul, desperately
in search of a home and a place to belong. Of course, when he actually
finds a place where he belongs and becomes comfortable, outside events
tear his world apart. This is a theme that was present in three of the
four previous HHGTTG books, but the presentation is probably the best
in "Mostly Harmless" (and particularly intriguing is that Arthur's
world is torn asunder by a person searching for the exact same thing as
Arthur had: a place to belong). The story of Tricia McMillan offers an
interesting counterpoint to Arthur's troubles. Although she is a successful
television personality, she is obsessed with the consequences of one of
her past choices. Unlike Arthur, who is preoccupied with the process of
finding a place to belong, Tricia is preoccupied with thoughts of what
might have been. Unlike his previous books, Adams allows the tragedy to
come to a fitting end. The tone is certainly darker than the previous
HHGTTG books, and the humour is perhaps less prevalent. Even so, it is
a fitting end to a fine series. |

Ainsworth's last masterpiece, The Lancashire Witches,
proved a best-seller in its day and influenced many contemporary authors.
The Lancashire Witches begins in the 16th century, in Lancashire, England.
When a Cistercian monk, Borlace Alvetham, is falsely accused of witchcraft
and condemned to death by his rival, Brother Paslew, he sells his soul to
Satan and escapes. Years later, granted the powers of a warlock, he returns
in the guise of Nicholas Demdike to witness Paslew's execution for treason.
Dying, Paslew curses Demdike's offspring -- who become the titular "Lancashire
Witches." The rest of the book is set in the 17th century. Mother Demdike,
a powerful witch, and her clan face rival witches, raise innocent young
Alizon Devi as their own, and try to corrupt Alizon despite her innocent
ways. Ultimately, the book becomes a struggle between Heaven and Hell, with
Alizon's fate hanging in the balance. |

In Kingsley Amis Difficulties With Girls , Jenny
Bunn and Patrick Standish have settled into London life with their troubled
courtship long behind them. Patrick works in publishing and Jenny teaches
sick children in a hospital. They have reached a certain level of maturity,
or so they think. It is not long before they realize their respectability
will be severely tested by seductive neighbours with a taste for whisky,
the sexually confused Ted Valentine, and the literary set of Hampstead.
In this funny and provocative study of a young couple growing up, Amis shows
us that the difficulty with marriage is that it's so hard to preserve, especially
when Patrick and Jenny harbour deep yearnings for a different kind of life.

THE ENORMOUS impression that Andreyev's JUDAS ISCARIOT
made when it first appeared was due not only to the immense power of the
narrative, but the author's daring & essentially modern treatment of
the Judas theme itself. Judas, as Andreyev saw him, was not simply the greatest
villain in history, but a hightly complicated, self-divided and tragic individual
who lovedd and admired Christ more than any other of the disciples, and
yet betrayed Him in a last desperate challenge to his own scepticism concerning
His Master's divinity. The present volume includes 2 further stories on
provocative themes. THE PHANTOMS is a worthy descendant of Tchehov's famous
WARD NO 6, whilst THE CHRISTIANS is full of bitter irony & moral defiance.
The outstanding translations are by Dr Walter Morison.

The Young Visiters is the book that started the schoolchild
genre subsequently defined by 1066 and All That and Molesworth's various
manuals such as Down with Skool and Whizz for Atoms. As with The Young Visiters,
the grammar, the language and the authorial viewpoint of those classics
contribute much to our enjoyment. Unlike its descendants, The Young Visiters
probably wasn't written by an adult. Purportedly written by a 9-year-old
girl in Victorian England, her inadvertent send-up of Victorian social mores,
status-climbing, and middle class ideas of gentility are absolutely delightful.
She also disposes of her characters in an abrupt and very satisfying way. |

Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM (9 May 1860 - 19 June
1937) was a Scottish author and dramatist, best remembered today as the
creator of Peter Pan. The child of a family of small-town weavers, he was
educated in Scotland. He moved to London, where he developed a career as
a novelist and playwright. There he met the Llewelyn Davies boys who inspired
him in writing about a baby boy who has magical adventures in Kensington
Gardens (included in The Little White Bird), then to write Peter Pan, or
The Boy Who Wouldn t Grow Up, a fairy play about this ageless boy and an
ordinary girl named Wendy who have adventures in the fantasy setting of
Neverland. This play quickly overshadowed his previous work and although
he continued to write successfully, it became his best-known work, credited
with popularising the name Wendy, which was very uncommon previously. Barrie
unofficially adopted the Davies boys following the deaths of their parents.
Before his death, he gave the rights to the Peter Pan works to Great Ormond
Street Hospital, which continues to benefit from them.

Bowles, Paul:
Too Far From Home
Peter Owen 1st 1994
F/F 252 gms
(Order reference 2384).
Paul Bowles's first novel for 25 years is a stunning interplay of
light and darkness.
Anita, newly divorced and world-weary, has escaped her routine in New York
to join her brother in the African desert.
As the heat and light bear down on her, the boundaries of her world disintegrate,
and she becomes aware of her racial and geographical alienation. She is
drawn deep into the dark underworld of her subconscious, until finally the
only course of action left is to return to what she knows, leaving behind
her a legacy of secrets. The
still, nihilistic tone of this novel is vintage Bowles.
`There
is about Paul's writing, at its best, a palpable darkness, like underexposed
film, that fills the narrow North African streets, always darker and darkening.
His writing is equally distinguished and special' - William S. Burroughs
`Bowles
is the real article: a man who translates deadly nightshade into sweet,
nourishing literature. He is subversive and dangerous, a true fictioneer'
- Geoffrey Wolff, Life
`His
stories are among the best ever written by an American' - Gore Vidal
"Pages
From Cold Point", a seduction of a father by a son, is one of the
best stories ever written by anyone' - Norman Mailer
`Paul
Bowles engages the reader with prose of flat honesty, while leading him
into dark alleys where he may not want to go. This scene is a truthful
and unflattering as is fate and death' - Patricia Highsmith
`Extraordinary,
highly literary, evocative, romantic' - Kathy Acker, The Guardian

A Christmas Child
Hodder & Stoughton 1st in this edn 1989
8vo M/F 260 gms
(Order reference 9655).
A young couple — Joe and Mary — arrive in a small Cumbrian
town on Christmas Eve. They have nowhere to stay and the woman is about
to have a child. Joe
has lived in this town before and some of his old friends and memories
return to haunt him. He is torn between the freedom of his earlier life
and his new responsibilities towards his young wife, who is soon to give
birth. Her life is absorbed by that mystery.
Melvyn Bragg evokes both a sense of place and a timelessness in this story
which echoes events two thousand years ago and still moves us today.

Cornwell,
Bernard: Harlequin
Harper Collins 1st 2000
large 8vo M/F. Signed by the author on a decorative
plate on 1/2 title. 730 gms
(Order reference 5665).
Harlequins are lost souls, so loved by thedevil that he would not
take them to hell, but left them to roam the world. In French the word is
hellequin and that is what they called the English archers who came across
the Channel to lay waste the towns and countryside.
Thomas of Hookton is one of those archers. When his village is sacked by
raiders, he escapes from his father's ambition for him to become a priest,
and becomes an archer in the army of King Edward III. The King and his son,
the Black Prince, are going to France with a great force of knights and
men-at-arms; it is led by great lords, but it is the archers, the common
men, who will decide the success or failure of the invasion.
Thomas, his previous world and promises forgotten, revels in the life of
an army at war and, even among those fighting men, becomes known for his
wildness and his fearsome skills. He falls in love with a Breton widow,
one of the enemy and of a different class, and his pursuit of her makes
him into a fugitive, hunted by the French and English alike. But an adversary
rescues him, leading him into a world where lovers become enemies and enemies
become friends. There, hidden beyond the horizon smeared by the smoke of
fires set by the rampaging English army, a man from the past awaits him,
a man who possesses something Thomas once made a sacred promise to retrieve.
And this shadowy enemy could harness the power of Christendom's greatest
relic, the grail itself.
In this, the first book of THE GRAIL QUEST series, Thomas begins his journey.
It leads him through the fields of France into hard times when hunger abrades
an army's ability to survive and the French corner the hated hellequin on
a hillside near the village of Crecy. There, in the midst of that first
great battle of what would become known as the Hundred Years' War, Thomas
will decide his loyalty at last. |

When Lugh the Harper, son of a Roman fugitive and an Irish
priestess in the second century AD, was driven from Connaught under a curse
for having killed the Queen's anointed consort, he sought refuge at the
court of her enemy, the High King of Ulster, and later among the Tuatha
de Danaan, the so-called `fairy folk' who lived in the hollow hills.
Many years later he set down his story for the benefit of his honoured friend
the Emperor Hadrian. It is a story of battle and love and carnage, of bitter
feuds and acts of heroism such as are still part of Ireland's heritage today;
a story of treachery in high places and loyalty that endured to the death;
of Cuchulain, Champion of Ulster, and the famous Cattle Raid of Cooley,
of Maeve of Connaught and Deirdre of the Sorrows, all narrated by a young
man who was witness to the events which his subsequent retelling made famous
in smoky halls of a winter's evening, ensuring their immortality.
It is a story to move hearts everywhere that respond to its humour and high
seriousness; to fascinate those who long to know what the distant past was
like; and to enthral all who are caught up in the joys and sorrows and strange
changes of fortune which mark the young harper's life.
This remarkable first novel, so detailed in its background, so talented
in its recreation of character and event, would be a noteworthy publishing
occasion in any circumstances. That its author was seventeen when she wrote
it singles it out as one of the most memorable literary debuts in the twentieth
century.

From
the blurb:
“Here
is the visual magic of the spectacular new movie The Dark Crystal, in
which Jim Henson and Frank Oz of Muppet fame, and their associates, collaborate
with the celebrated illustrator Brian Froud (Faeries and The Land of Froud),
to create a fantastic ancient civilization – bringing life its people,
geography, laws, language and mythology.
With
over 200 pictures by Brian Froud (most in full colour) and its story of
Tolkien-like fascination, this book is both a lavish introduction to the
world of The Dark Crystal and a work of fantasy and artistry that stands
completely on its own.
By
means of dramatic illustration and imaginative text, Brian Froud and Professor
J J Llewellyn have created – through the “writings”
of the wise and ancient woman Aughra – the complex and absorbing
world of the film so perfectly that it could almost have existed.”

According to Uncle Jacob, David Brock
was a born failure.
While his cousin, Eric, rose to the top of his class at West Point, David
grew his hair, did any drugs he could lay his hands on, and waited passively
for a revolution that never came.
Eric
died a hero in Vietnam. But David, having dodged the draft, spun out his
life on a remote Canadian island, flying kites and watching the days drift
past.
With the sudden death of his uncle, David, as the only surviving member
of the great Brock family, finds himself temporarily in control of a multi-national
conglomerate, whose headquarters are situated in a decaying luxury hotel
in Bermuda called Whisperland. The
mystery surrounding this unexpected inheritance is nothing compared with
the mystery of Whisperland itself. David Brock knows all about living
with the ghosts of the past, but he could never imagine how they might
come to haunt him.
Ingenious, provocative, sinister, Christopher Hyde's new thriller probes
into secrets that have lain hidden for more than half a century. |

Miss
Read Ills by Tracey Williamson: Miss Read's
Christmas Book
Michael Joseph 1st 1992
sm square format 4to M/M 470 gms
(Order reference 5201).
From the blurb: “And
what could be a more delightful celebration than Miss Read's illustrated
selection of Christmas verse and prose? Poems and extracts from novels
and diaries - linked by Miss Read's commentary - are spiced by delicious
recipes for plum pudding and mulled wine, and blended with joyful Christmas
carols and scenes from Miss Read's own novels. All capture the merriment,
time-honoured traditions and spirit of the season, from the first preparations,
to the festive day itself and through to Twelfth Night.
Here
are Thomas Hardy's carol-singers; Ernest Shepard waking as a child to
a Christmas stocking; an icy Christmas morning for Francis Kilvert; A.A.
Milne's helpful suggestion for having to give unexpected presents; Charles
Dickens's famous Christmas dinner; Dylan Thomas’s family visitors;
Parson Woodforde’s New Year reflections - and other writings besides.
Rich with the characteristic love of people and nature, rural life and
domestic pleasures that Miss Read's devotees treasure, this enchanting
anthology is enhanced by Tracey Williamson's beautiful watercolours.”

Rice, Anne:
Interview with the Vampire
Macdonald Raven Books 1st 1976
8vo, a superb unread copy of this scarce British edition. Mint in a Fine
d/w. An excellent copy. 575 gms
(Order reference 5154).
A young man pours out an almost hypnotic account of his life. Gifted
with immortality, cursed with a craving for human blood, he has lived two
hundred years as a vampire.
He speaks quietly, gently...of the night when, a rich young heir,he departed
human existence and was inducted into the "endless life". Reluctant
to take human life, lie learns first to sustain himself on the blood of
animals. But as the years pass lie gradually embraces the habits, hungers,
feelings of vampirism; the detachment, the hardened will, the sensual pleasure.
In a dark New Orleans street he finds the exquisite lost child, Claudia,
wanting not to hurt but to comfort her, struggling against the last residue
of human feeling within him...and we see how Claudia in turn becomes a vampire.
We see them joined against the envious. dangerous rival vampire,Lestat,
embarking on a perilous search across Europe for others like themselves,
desperate to discover the ways of survival, to know what they are and why.
In Paris they discover the Theatre des Vampires, the beautiful, lewd and
febrile mime theatre whose posters of penny-dreadful vampires at once mask
and reveal the horror within. And they meet the eerily magnetic Armand,
who brings them, at last, into intimacy with a whole brilliant and decadent
society of vampires: an intimacy that becomes sudden terror when they are
compelled to confront wlhat they feared and flee...
This unceasing flow of spellbinding storytelling, of danger and flight.
loyalty and treachery, announces a,literary imagination of the first order.

A story as contemporaneous as to-day's Stop Press.
Max Andrea is one of the great atomic physicists. His faith is simple and
perhaps even right. But, not right at all, judged by to-day's Stop Press
demands.
Max Andrea's brain is a weapon: a weapon for power, for good or evil, stretching
beyond the horizons of wild men's wildest dreams: an abstruse weapon, only
to be grasped through torture, and drugs, and brain-washing. Or, so it appeared
to some.
From Top Secret government work to Dartmoor gaol, and thence to a quiet
cottage in Devonshire. A mind accustomed to working as a high precision
instrument far out in the dim reaches of human understanding, despite itself,
is touched by love. But, not for long. Its peculiar fate lies far away.
The story takes us half across the world. It mirrors the impact of to-day's
science and to-day's ethics on that thread of life and human behaviour which
must, for ever, go on unchanged.
In Case, Miss White proved that she could tell a story with less sentiment
and less waste of words than most. In Case for Treachery she has bettered
her previous performance.
