A Genuine
'Dicky Sam': Liverpool and Slavery
Scouse Press no date
8vo paperback 137pp VG++ 225 gms
(Order reference 13025).
From the foreword by Fritz Spiegl:
Just as a Cockney is a Londoner born in the inner city of London, so a
Dicky Sam is a Liverpudlian born within the sound of the bells of St Nicholas's
Church on the Pier Head; hence the 'real' Dicky Sam on the title~page
of this book.
The
Victorian author of this book chose to disguise his identity under the
psuedonym 'Dicky Sam' for a good reason: when he wrote it, many of the
former slave merchants (or at any rate their sons) would still have been
alive, deprived of a lucrative living not many decades earlier through
the efforts of the abolitionists; and he would have numbered friends among
both slavers and abolitionists. It must be pointed out that his book,
like many other accounts, gives too much emphasis to slave auctions allegedly
carried on in Liverpool. Let it again be said that traders were clever
enough to disguise the 'Africa Trade' (as it was euphemistically called)
by taking Lancashire cotton goods and other manufactured items to Africa,
trading them against slaves ~ always, of course, with the active participation
of African chiefs, who had no hesitation in selling their own people:
cruelty and inhumanity of man to man know no colour distinctions. From
Africa the traded blacks were taken to the America and the West Indies,
where they were sold against raw cotton, rum, sugar, tobacco, spices and
other local produce to bring back to the shores of Britain. Thus the boats
left and returned carrying ‘respectable’ cargo, and helped
to still the growing unease felt among the traditionally liberal and Christian
English population.
In
recent years it has become fashionable among some sections of the Liverpool
community to tar all Liverpool merchants of the 18th and 19th centuries
with the same brush. Some unruly individuals recently have even carried
their hate~fed ignorance so far as to deface, or mindlessly destroy, monuments
to the very men who worked tirelessly for the abolition of the slave~trade,
merely because they were Liverpool worthies of the past. It is hoped that
this book will help to spread greater awareness of their noble work as
well as that of the wicked slave~traders. And it is to a renewed spirit
of co~operation and understanding between the many races that comprise
the new, and no less genuine, Dicky Sams that this centenary reprint is
dedicated.

(Order reference 13749).
Fabulous Liverpool - hub of Merseyside and a seaport city of exciting
contrasts - is renowned for its friendly folk, humour and magic music.
Once honoured with the title of 'Second City of the Empire', Liverpool has
woven a history of thriving maritime and commercial business, culture and
architecture. It is the birthplace of numerous famous and talented people,
including a plethora of brilliant entertainers of stage and screen, not
to mention its three great football clubs.
Liverpool was 'home' to fleets of world renowned luxury liners - including
Mauritania (1), holder of the Blue Riband of the Atlantic for 22 years.
Even the Titanic was registered at Liverpool!
Some nine million emigrants passed through the Port of Liverpool on passages
for new lives in the New World and Antipodes.
Here, too, in the most important wartime port in Britain, was the secret
headquarters which controlled the Battle of the Atlantic.
Today's huge, modern Royal Seaforth Docks cater for growing shipping traffic,
and Liverpool's 600-acre Freeport is the largest and most successful in
Britain.
Liverpool was the starting place for the world's first real passenger and
freight railway - GeorgeStephenson's Liverpool & Manchester Railway.
It also boasts two magnificent cathedrals and two universities.
The wonders created by the massive restoration and transformation of miles
of Mersey waterfront attract millions of visitors, and the area, including
Birkenhead, also embraces two popular seaside resorts in Southport and New
Brighton.
Images of Merseyside draws on the huge collection of photographs held by
the Liverpool Post & Echo. The result is a book which will delight Merseysiders
young and old alike, as it shows the people, the buildings and the events
down the years to provide a fascinating pictorial record of this historic,
vibrant city and its surrounds. Front
cover shows, Main picture: Liverpool waterfront, everyone's image of Merseyside;
Inset left: The Derby House War Room which commanded the Western Approaches;
Inset right: Liverpool's most famous quartet, the Beatles, in 1962. |

Brogden,
Mike: On the Mersey Beat - policing Liverpool
between the wars
Oxford University Press 1st 1991
8vo, short crse + small tr to d/w o/w F/VG++ 465 gms
(Order reference 10465).
On the Mersey Beat tells the story of police life
in one of Britain's great cities before the Second World War. This is the
story of the policemen (for there were no policewomen) who policed Liverpool
between the wars. Related in their own words it tells of working conditions
which, judged even by standards of the day, were appalling, of a hostile
public wary of police officers and of dictatorial police chiefs willing
to go to extreme lengths to keep the streets of Liverpool free of `undesirables'.
Using the oral testimony of survivors from this period On the Mersey Beat
brings to life the often mundane, yet occasionally dangerous life of the
'beat policeman'. Tales of relations with bookies and prostitutes, the pettiness
of CID work, and the all-important relationship of the police with industrial
workers and ethnic minorities are recounted by the men, often ill-trained
and ill-prepared, whose task it was to police the streets of Liverpool.
This is the compelling, dramatic, and often moving story of the men who
walked `The Mersey Beat'. |

Brooke,
Richard: Liverpool As It Was 1775-1800
Liverpool Libraries and Information Services 1st 2003
large 8vo F+/F Facsimile of 1853 1st edn. 1225 gms
(Order reference 12406).
This book was first published in 1853 as "Liverpool
as it was during the last quarter of the eighteenth century, 1775 to 1800."
Liverpool Libraries and Information Services has reproduced it with an introduction
by Jane Longmore, an expert on the history of Liverpool in this period,
and illustrations from the extensive archives of Liverpool Record Office.
The information in the book came from many sources including the recollections
of the author's father, also called Richard Brooke, who lived until he was
ninety-two years old. He had witnessed great changes in the town as the
population grew from about 35,000
in 1775 to 376,000 by the time of his death in 1852. He was said to have
been "gifted with a clear and retentive memory" and knew many
notable Liverpudlians of his day, including William Roscoe, the Rathbones
and Banastre Tarleton.
The book paints a vivid picture of Liverpool at this time, describing the
streets and buildings, how the inhabitants earned their livings, and how
they enjoyed themselves. |

Garfield,
Simon: The Last Journey of William Huskisson
Faber & Faber 1st 2002
8vo M/F 380 gms
(Order reference 9043).
‘The engine attained the speed of 35 miles per hour, which
made it the fastest train in the world. Unaware of the incident, vast crowds
of onlookers waved heartily as the calamity rattled past...’
The Liverpool and Manchester Railway was the greatest engineering feat of
its age. George and Robert Stephenson's Rocket was to become the most famous
locomotive in history. William Huskisson was one of the greatest statesmen
of his generation, and certainly the most accident prone.
On 15 September 1830, the three met for the first time.
Huskisson's fateful accident, in which the Rocket crushed his leg and thigh,
is an unforgettable image of the Industrial Revolution. But what really
happened on that day? How did the opening of the world's first passenger
railway turn from a glorious morning into a tragic afternoon?
The Last Journey of William Huskisson is a wonderfully entertaining tale
of ambition, genius, rivalry and legend, plotting the eight~year struggle
to build a railway with a cast of engineers, politicians, actresses, surgeons,
socialites and breathtaking machines. It is a loud and evocative snapshot
of the times, but above all it is a deeply affecting human story of one
man's shocking and very gory demise.
This is an uncorrected proof copy.

Ian: The Liverpool Connection
Countyvise 1st 1992
8vo paperback 145pp F. Biographies of 12 Liverpool-born celebrities 285

(Order reference 8427).
Ian Hargreaves, regular writer and columnist with the Liverpool
Echo and Daily Post, has met many interesting people during his many years
with those papers. An 'adopted Liverpudlian' himself, he has chosen twelve
men and women who are either Liverpool born and bred, or who have had a
great impact after coming to this city.
This is not just reporter's heresay, Ian has meticulously researched his
subjects and in each case has personally interviewed them.
Those who feature in this book have very different personalities; age, sex,
upbringing, interests are all quite disparate but they all have character
and each has made a very positive contribution to society.
Consider this list -
Edwina Currie~ Alfie Lewis
Lord Derby~ Gerry Marsden
Ken Dodd~ John Parrott
Harold Francis~ Councillor Harry Rimmer
John Hardman~ Peter Robinson
Carla Lane Archbishop~ Derek Warlock

This study is concerned with the medieval town of Liverpool and

of the City of Liverpool and the growth of the town in the period from 1207
to 1727 is traced through its principal sites and buildings.

From the foreword by Billy Butler:
In these days of the trivia craze, when the utmost pleasure is realised
from knowing more of those irritating titbits than the next man, how can
yet another trivia book create excitement? ~ (answer) ~ When it's a trivia
book about our own hometown ~ Liverpool.
You now have in your hand the ultimate argument settler, the bible of Scouse
facts. No more will you be thwarted by the bar~room bore who knows everything.
With this volume you have the ammunition to fight back with a priceless
compendium of catalogued curios about our hometown. What is Ian Botham's
connection with Merseyside? What does the series ‘Brideshead Revisited’
have Liverpool to thank for? Where was Peter Adamson really born? Yet the
A~Z of Scouseology isn't just a massive list of facts. It's put together
with the humour and the asides Scousers are noted for and the authors have
obviously enjoyed every moment of their research into the depths of Scouse
trivia, and that shines through.
So be ready for an outbreak of Scouse trivia in pubs, clubs, and restaurants.
Expect to be asked such riveting posers as which Liverpool~born assassin
was apprehended by Bamber Gascoigne? What does Smithdown Road Hospital have
to do with a world~famous sex change? Where was ArthurAskey born? Who played
in goal for the Back Entry Diddlers? All this and more is revealed within.
Cherish this volume, it could be the first of many volumes destined to keep
Scouse knowledge seekers locked in the loo for an eternity!

The Edwardian era saw the City of Liverpool at its peak of confidence.
Almost unchallenged in its commercial strength, the city did things in style.
The electric tramways were a notable part of the success story that was
Liverpool in the thriving pre-1914 years.
This volume resumes the story of Liverpool's trams and buses from the turn
of the century and continues through the difficult years of the Great War
and the turbulent nineteen-twenties. Many technical innovations are described
in detail, on the cars and along the tracks, and the emergence of the motor
bus is traced as it challenged not only the trams but the Corporation itself.
Public transport made the city possible and now let it grow. These years
saw housing estates, municipal and private, cover the green fields while
trams and buses with perhaps the lowest fares in England supported the new
suburban lifestyle. These were also the years when money could be made in
road passenger transport and private bus operators indulged in cut-throat
competition; encouraged by Liverpool's sometimes unfriendly neighbours the
newcomers ended any monopoly the trams once had.
The reality of working life on the tramways is detailed, with short biographies
of the major figures. The relationship between managers and men is traced
as paternalism faded before the growth of trade unionism and inter-union
strife.

Liverpool
Black Caucus: The Racial Politics of Militant
in Liverpool - the black community's struggle for participation in local
politics 1980-1986
Merseyside Area Profile Group and Runnymede Trust 1st 1986
8vo paperback 144pp, very minor sunning to sp, very slight yellowing to
covers o/w VG++ 230 gms
(Order reference 7303).
The last decade has seen a steady growth in the political participation
and influence of black communities, and many serious attempts by local councils
to challenge racial inequality at municipal level. Britain's oldest established
black community lives in the long~declining city of Liverpool where generations
of black people have faced and fought discrimination and disadvantage. In
1980 Liverpool City Council finally adopted an Equal Opportunities Policy
and a broadly based Black Caucus emerged to campaign in the Council and
in the community for this policy to become a reality. But the Caucus met
solid resistance from the Council which, since 1983, has been ruled by a
decisive Labour majority. The dominant force in the Labour Council is the
Militant Tendency and it is their policies inspired by their analysis of
racial politics that has brought the sharpest conflicts with the Black Caucus
and dealt the most forceful blows to the policy.
This book describes the continuing battle of Liverpool's black community
for political participation and racial equality in the face of powerful
opposition. It is essential reading for all who are interested or involved
in the struggle against racism and discrimination in political parties,
local government and in the wider community.
The book includes a foreword by the Archbishop and Bishop of Liverpool and
also publishes for the first time evidence submitted by Black Caucus members
to the Labour Party National Executive Inquiry into the Liverpool District
Labour Party.
The Liverpool Black Caucus is the group of representatives from local black
organisations elected since 1981 to sit on the Race Relations Liaison Committee
of Liverpool City Council, until the local Labour leadership abolished the
Committee in 1985.

Liversedge,
Stan: Liverpool from the Inside
Mainstream Publishing 1st 1995
8vo F/F 700 gms
(Order reference 4149).
Liverpool FC has long been recognised as one of the greatest football
clubs the world has ever known. Hugely successful throughout the 1970s and
1980s, with a record~breaking string of Championship and Cup wins at home
and in Europe and a legendary support, it was widely believed that Liverpool
were untouchable. But a series of disasters struck the club and almost broke
its spirit: the tragedies of the Heysel Stadium and Hillsborough were compounded
by the controversies of the Souness years. With the growing strength of
Manchester United, Newcastle, Blackburn and half a dozen other clubs in
the Premiership, many of the game's observers predicted that Liverpool's
fortunes would never again be revived. Now,
however, with the 1995 Coca~Cola Cup won and a place in Europe guaranteed
for season 1995~96, things are looking up. And one man has seen the club
through all the highs and lows of the last three decades: Stan Liversedge,
known to the Anfield legions as the editor of the club's match~day programmes,
was on the inside of this world~renowned institution for almost twenty
years. His unrivalled access to the club's top players, its managers,
backroom staff and its board of directors gives Liverpool from the Inside
a fascinating authenticity. Ian Rush and John Barnes sharing their view
of Graeme Souness; Bruce Grobbelaar defending himself against corruption
allegations; and Peter Beardsley describing how Kenny Dalglish was ready
to sign him for a record fee ~ and how Graeme Souness eventually sold
him. Stan Liversedge writes about how and why the club makes its major
decisions, about the effects of stress on managers and in chronicling
the triumphs, tragedies and tarnished image of Liverpool FC, no one is
better placed to reveal the inner workings of a club which has undergone
massive upheaval in recent years. |

O'Mara, Pat:
The Autobiography of a Liverpool Slummy
Bluecoat Press no date
4to paperback 221pp, minor wear+ creasing to covers o/w VG++ 575 gms
(Order reference 11836).
THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A LIVERPOOL SLUMMY is a fascinating picture
of Liverpool life in the early years of this century.
Born in abject poverty in one of the city's worst slums, Pat O'Mara chronicles
a tough childhood dominated by a brutal, alcoholic father. Survival is paramount
but there is no room for sentimentality in this remarkable account of one
man's fight to escape the drabness and poverty that surrounds him.
The
Autobiography of a Liverpool Slummy is essential reading for anyone interested
in social history and the lives of those born without privilege and opportunity.
Pat O'Mara's dramatic account of his childhood and adolescence is particularly
valuable in its revelation of the techniques of survival (the money~lenders
and pawnbrokers, the false compensation claims, the tricks and frauds
perpetrated against foreign seamen) and its eye~witness account of major
incidents (particularly the Lusitania riots and the Police Strike). Above
all, however, it is the claustrophobia of slum life that captures the
attention and makes the book so indispensable.

Countyvise 1st 1991
8vo paperback 320pp, very very minor wear to covers o/w F 600 gms
(Order reference 11816).
This book is more than a history of the oldest school of its kind
in the world. Mike Royden looks at the changing society in Liverpool in
the late eighteenth century, the philosophical, medical and educational
developments, and the founding of contemporary institutions.
He has placed the School in its local, national and international context
and has unearthed a wealth of material of value to the social historian
and general reader alike. This is more than just a narrow history of a school
~ it is a reflection of the society around it.

Shortfall,
Barry: The Cameo Murders
Bluecoat Press no date
4to paperback 223pp, very very minor bmp + wear to edges of covers o/w VG++
390 gms
(Order reference 11727).
Fifty years have now passed since the brutal murders of the manager
and his assistant at the Cameo Cinema in Liverpool. Immediately, the police
launched a massive manhunt and over 9,500 houses were visited, 75,000 people
interviewed, 1,800 fingerprints taken and handwriting samples taken from
1,840 women. The subsequent trial and conviction of George Kelly and Charles
Connolly made legal history. The first trial was the longest murder trial
in England and Kelly become one of few men to be tried twice for a capital
offence. The conviction and execution of Kelly is one of the milestones
which led to the eventual ending of capital punishment. The probability
of a miscarriage of justice has ensured the Cameo case a lasting place in
Liverpool folklore. Barry Shortall's gripping account of the case is essential
reading. Charles Connnolly's counsel at his first trial ended his defence:
"I ask you to use this test: would it be right in the years ahead when
you look back at the Cameo murder trial to be able to say, 'I know what
I did was right. If you look back and said, 'I think', and 'I hope', then
your verdict will not be right".

This is the fifteenth book to be written by Tom Slemen and the tenth
in the Haunted Liverpool series and it bears all the hallmarks of the master
storyteller's work: alongside a classic mix of murder, mystery and suspense
you will find local tales of the supernatural, unexplained mysteries and
the downright weird and grotesque. From the shocking cases of the demonic
ship's captain who slaughtered most of his crew and the headless nun who
reduces a grown man to jelly, to the crazed parrot whose mimicry exposes
an adulteress and the girl in the red dress who is a harbinger of doom,
these stories, like all his others, will make the hair stand up on the back

In Haunted Liverpool 4, best~selling author, Tom Slemen, has gathered
together another superb collection of stories of the paranormal. From his
extensive research, he has written about the world of apparitions and premonitions,
devils and demons and ghosts and ghouls. Each
of the stories has a Liverpool connection, but you will also be transported
to the Australian outback, the volcanic island of Martinique and across
the Atlantic Ocean in an old slave ship. You will be amazed by the story
of the fireproof man and the invisible girl; chilled by the Rodney .Street
ghost and the woman in black and touched by the sad tale of a dog named
Sam.
Tom
Slemen's latest collection of bizarre tales confirms that he is a master
storyteller, who gives his readers a fascinating insight into the other
world.

Tom: Strange Liverpool
Bluecoat Press 1st 2005
8vo paperback 127pp, crse to fr cvr + minor wear to edges of covers o/w
VG+ 250 gms
(Order reference 11029).
Tom Slemen has earned himself an enviable reputation as Liverpool's
foremost authority on the paranaormal. Tom is well known both on local radio
and in the local press and his Haunted Liverpool books are all bestsellers.
In the course of his research into the supernatural, he frequently comes
across true stories which do not fit into this category, but are fascinating
nonetheless. Over the years, he has filed these stories away and has now
brought them together to produce an intriguing mix in Strange Liverpool.
It
is probably the sheer variety of his stories which is the key to his success,
taken as they are from way back in the past, right up to the present day,
and featuring characters from all walks of life.
In
Strange Liverpool we meet Mick Riley, a lazy Liverpool layabout who perfected
the art of doing nothing and was the person responsible for the saying
'enjoying the life of Riley'. In total contrast, Owen Elias, a simple
Welsh lad from Angelsey, came to Liverpool to make his fortune and through
sheer hard work and determination, built street after street of Victorian
Liverpool.
From
the French birdman who met his death at Speke airport, to the gang of
barefoot child thieves who led the police in Victorian Liverpool a merry
dance; from Scary Mary of Scotland Road, to Dashing Dan of Lime Street,
this book is crammed full of strange and incredible characters and is
a must for all Tom Slemen fans.

Michael: Sail on the Mersey
Countyvise 1st 1984
4to stapled paperback 36pp, one of the colour plates of the front cover
image has been printed 'off set' o/w VG++ 160 gms
(Order reference 6503).
One hundred years ago the Mersey was crowded with sailing ships.
The tall masts of deep sea barques and ships were to be seen in almost every
dock. The picture of Queens Dock in the 1880s was typical. Hundreds of small
craft, flats, schooners, gig boats, fishing trawlers, all worked under sail.
Many of the growing fleet of steamers still carried full sets of sails as
a sort of `belt and braces' precaution in case their engines broke down.
This publication illustrates the history of sailing ships on the Mersey
over the last one hundred and fifty years. It has views of the river and
the docks in the days of sail and pictures of some of the different types
of vessel to be seen. It also has pictures of some of the most famous ships
of the sailing ship era including the most famous of them all, the tea clipper
Cutty Sark.

Yorke,
Barbara & Reginald (compiled by): Images
of England - Formby, Freshfield and Altcar
Tempus Publishing 1st 1999
4to paperback 128pp, prev owner's name + address sticker to inside fr cvr
o/w VG++ 305 gms
(Order reference 11803).
Formby and its environs have a history dating back to before the
Domesday Book. For most of this period it was a small, isolated village,
but after the coming of the railway it grew in size and importance. This
collection provides a pictorial record of the last century or so of Formby’s
existence and charts the changes in buildings, streets, employment, leisure
and society. According
to local legend, the first potatoes grown in England were planted here,
taken from a wrecked ship. The importance of agriculture and land management
has persisted since ~ prize~winning asparagus was grown here until fairly
recent times and management and protection of the extensive sand dunes
continues today.
In
addition to the ‘traditional’ picture~postcard views of the
town, this intriguing selection of archive photographs portrays the everyday
life, work and leisure of Formby's inhabitants. Not surprisingly, the
sea has played a significant role and this is recognized by a chapter
devoted to the marine rescue services. Formby's lifeboat station was the
first in the country, a fact discovered and researched by the authors
in their first book. The importance of Freshfield sands in pioneer aviation
and of the coastal defences in two world wars is also not forgotten.
Many
of the photographs included here come from the albums of members of the
Formby Society, who have also contributed valuable information to the
captions, which are rich in historical detail and anecdotes. This nostalgic
compilation is sure to appeal to all those who know Formby, Freshfield
and Altcar.

It's Sound - a celebration of Radio Meseyside
Bluecoat Press 1st 1997
4to paperback 111pp, very very minor wear to edges of cvrs, minor dmge to
fep + front pastedown o/w VG++ 500 gms
(Order reference 11008).
Radio can be the most satisfying of all mediums but also one of
the most frustrating. It can be a friendly fireside companion on a winters
night, the supplier of key information,¬ the buffer against loneliness
on a long drive, or your cheerful wake up call in the morning. It can also
drive you crazy. Is there anything more annoying than just hearing the end
of an item and wondering what had gone before, or catching the last few
bars of a favourite record? In
this advanced age of communications ranging from television text services
to the internet, the radio is still the prime source of information for
many people, especially here on Merseyside.
This
book attempts to combine the spirit of radio with a glimpse behind the
microphone at Radio Merseyside. The book is not a catalogue of events
covered by Radio Merseyside since its launch in 1967, rather it gives
a flavour of the station's output over the years ~ highlighting some of
the items that may have touched you across the airwaves.
It
is not a book of lists, a news review of the last thirty years, or even
a definitive profile of Britain's most successful local radio station.
It is a dip into our recent history as heard over the radio, touching
on the tragic, the comic, the important and the trivial.
We
hope that, like Radio Merseyside, this book will entertain, inform, and
stimulate.
