Donaldson,
Christine: Patchwork Baby - original patchwork
& quilted designs
Little, Brown & Co. 1994
square format 4to, short closed tears to dustwrapper o/w F/VG+ 830 gms
(Order reference 14282).
Christine Donaldson has created a glorious range of over 20 original
designs for babies up to the age of 18 months. They consist of clothes and
colourful nursery accessories. The
book uses a great variety of techniques some relying on hand sewing - such
as English, Dresden plate and cathedral window patchwork and others which
can be made by machine -log cabin, seminole and American block patchwork.
Some of the projects include quilting or applique.
Originally patchwork and quilting were produced by using scraps of fabrics
salvaged from garments too worn out to be of further use. Some of the early
American quilts, made by pioneer women in this manner, used plain red and
white calicoes and even flour sacking. Yet the patterns produced are so
intricate as to transform these humble materials into little works of art.
Some form of patchwork and quilting was practised by most rural societies
around the world and the preparation of a tiny quilt, made of the softest
and most colourful scraps of fabric collected for a long time among a group
of women, would herald the birth of a child ..
PATCHWORK BABY is therefore steeped in the tradition, although in our more
affluent days we are more likely to explore the remnant counter rather than
the family ragbag for inspiration. A
craft born of necessity and as a way to occupy long winter evenings now
has to be fitted into the busy lives most women lead today. The projects
included in this book have been carefully graded. Some are very simple
and can be made in a short time, even by a novice, while others - the
christening robe for instance - require a good deal of time and patience
and a higher level of skill. But the impact of patchwork relies largeJy
on the careful juxtaposition of light and dark and on the choice of colours
so that even the simplest objects can be made into very special gifts.

Have
you ever wanted to create a textile work of art that is both beautiful
and exciting, but perhaps not known quite where to begin? Designed for
quilters and embroiderers, here is a book full of imagination, information,
ideas and practical step-by-step guidance on an enduring and entrancing
subject.
Taking the theme of fairy tales, old and new, with their enthralling blend
of magic and commonsense, slapstick humour and high romance, princesses
and woodcutters, knights and dragons, a group of textile artists have
let their imaginations run riot and have translated these stories into
fabrics and stitches.
Starting
with the initial planning and drawing stage, which is the main stumbling
block for most of us, Gail Harker demonstrates, in clearly described and
illustrated stages, how anyone — even a complete beginner - can
achieve a beautiful and rewarding result by using the same straightforward
techniques as the professionals.
In successive chapters she shows how to enhance your work by using fabric
dyes and colouring techniques, steps to successful quilting and applique,
automatic and free machine embroidery, how to make a textile fairy tale
book, and how to finish your work.
Filled with full colour pictures of works by today's leading textile artists,
this book is a pleasure to look through. It is also an invaluable work
of reference for anyone wanting to create their own quilt or embroidery.

Jenkins,
Susan & Seward, Linda: Quilts - The American
Story - with patterns to make 30 authentic quilts
Harper Collins 1st 1991
large 4to, glazed pictorial boards in similar dustwrapper M/M 1320 gms
(Order reference 4741).
Susan Jenkins owns one of the most spectacular private
collections of antique American quilts in existence. Quilts features the
cream of her collection - most of which have never been published before,
plus detailed easy-to-follow patterns for the reader to recreate 30 authentic
quilt designs.
The first part of the book features full colour photographs of thirty-five
of the quilts, each one a dramatic example of the folk art of its period,
and each with a story to tell. Other photographs of historical interest
are also included, accompanied by Susan Jenkins' richly inspiring text,
drawing together the many threads which make up the fascinating story of
the American quilt.
The second part of the book contains complete patterns for 30 of the quilts,
including detailed instructions and templates. The projects are divided
into three groups: easy designs that a beginner can tackle with no difficulty,
intermediate patterns for those with some experience, and advanced projects
for accomplished quilters who are not afraid of a challenge.
Each pattern is illustrated with a colour photograph of the quilt, together
with twocolour pattern drawings. The project quilts have been chosen to
represent a comprehensive selection of varying techniques, styles and designs
and any needleworker who has ever aspired to quiltmaking will find a pattern
here to tempt. In addition, a detailed Techniques section gives full instructions
on basic quilt-making - from choice of fabric and making templates, to quilting
and finishing off the quilt.
American quilts are becoming more collectable, and are attracting ever'
more interest. Over many years of collecting, Susan Jenkins has become not
only an infectious enthusiast for her subject, but also very knowledgeable
about every aspect of quilt history. Quilts will be a 'must' for any collector
or would-be collector, and will inspire many others to take up this absorbing
craft.

Osler,
Dorothy: Merehurst Embroidery Skills - Quilting
Merehurst reprint 1992
square format 4to, glazed pictorial boards in a similar dustwrapper M/VG++
585 gms
(Order reference 11212).
This practical and inspirational book examines the centuries~old
craft of quilting. In recent years, quilting has tended to be regarded as
simply a subsidiary skill to patchwork and appliqué. Now, an increasing
number of needlewomen have recognized that quilting is a highly subtle art
form, capable of producing a truly beautiful blend of pattern and texture.
After a brief look at the historical background, the author, who is a leading
authority on the subject, describes the basic materials and skills that
are required. She then shows to quilt by hand or machine.
Next, the intricacies of pattern and design are investigated, and Dorothy
Osler shows clearly how to make both motifs and filler patterns, and how
to combine them to produce a truly satisfying work of art. She finishes
with a look at some of the special effects with which modern quilt artists
are experimenting.
Of great value both to beginners and to those who would like to improve
their skills, the book is fully illustrated in colour, with step~by~step
photographs to show techniques. It also contains many examples of quilts~
traditional and modern~ that explain why quilting is now enjoying a revival
of popularity.

Puls, Herta:
The Art of Cutwork and Applique - historic,
modern and Kuna Indian
B T Batsford 1st 1978
4to, previous owner's bookplate + name & address sticker to front pastedown
o/w F/F 850 gms
(Order reference 5129).
Cutwork and applique are two directly opposed but nevertheless closely
related techniques, both dating back to the earliest known documentation
of stitchery.
A brief introduction describes the beginnings of embroidery from the purely
practical to the use of elaborate symbolism to convey status and to provide
communication. Then, with the minimum of words and the use of superb photographs
of the best examples of cutwork and applique from many countries, the author
shows the historical development of these embroideries.
Herta Puis started her research of Kuna Indians and their mol as in 1969
in the British Museum and the enthnographic museums of Gothenburg and Hamburg,
and finally visited eight of the San Bias Islands, off Panama, studying
their embroidery. She found that the mola work was an ideal way of linking
cutwork and applique and it is these designs and techniques which inspired
her and which form the basis of her book.
A detailed step by step description with clear diagrams of the mola techniques
are included. Examples of the author's own work are also described and illustrated
from the design stage through to the final piece, showing the influence
her visit to the Kuna Indians has had on her work.
Technical information, a bibliography, list of suppliers, also an index,
add to the usefulness of this not only practical but also fascinating book
which brings a fresh look at two traditional embroidery techniques.

Svennas, Elsie:
Advanced Quilting
Evans Bros 1st 1980
4to, creasing + chips + 2 tiny tears to dustwrapper o/w VG++/VG+ 590 gms
(Order reference 4728).
Elsie Svennas's beautiful and novel ideas for quilting - often combined
with patchwork and applique - will be a revelation to those who always thought
the limit of the technique was the traditional quilted bedspread. She uses
quilting to make, patch, mend ana alter clothes, and to make accessories,
toys, soft furnishings and, perhaps most excitingly, pictures and wall hangings.
A wealth of drawings and photographs illustrate the techniques
and show what can be achieved by experimenting with textures, incorporating
cherished fragments of precious material or odd scraps, with ingenuity and
innovation.
Although this is not a book for beginners, and many of these ideas need
a considerable degree of skill, Elsie Svennas's enthusiasm and encouragement
will certainly inspire you to explore this technique further.

Wilkinson,
Rosemary (ed): The Weekend Quilter - fabulous
quilts to make in a weekend
New Holland 1st 1997
large 4to, glazed pictorial boards in similar dustwrapper M/VG++ 885 gms
(Order reference 4746).
Taking their inspiration from the countryside in all seasons and
at different times of the day, five expert quiltmakers have produced a wonderfully
diverse collection of bed quilts, cot quilts, throws and wall~hangings,
all to make in a weekend.
Alongside the rotary cutter and the sewing machine, indispensable aids for
the quilter in a hurry, they introduce a wide range of other speedy techniques,
such as bonded applique, quilt~as~you~go, strip~piecing, tying, big stitch
quilting and hand dyeing. The quilts are made in an equally varied range
of fabrics, including cheerful cottons, showcased silks, warm and snug flannels
and no~fray felts
In "Zigzags and Meanders" Pauline Adams explores ancient patterns
and strippy~style quilts. Gill Turley takes the inspiration for her designs
from old patchworks and the land around her in "Changing Seasons".
For Jenni Dobson, Japanese textile and quilt designs reflect her own thoughts
on nature in "Simple and Serene, while Anne Walker uses the development
of American trade blankets as a design source in her Pioneer Blankets".
Carol Dowsett captures the passing day in "Night and Day".
The section on quick techniques describes and illustrates how to make the
best use of the rotary cutter and sewing machine to speed up routine tasks,
as well as giving basic finishing instructions for the quilts throughout
the book.
Each of the 26 quilts is photographed in full colour on location and full,
step by step instructions are given, illustrated with vibrant diagrams to
help you make a stunning, successful quilt in a weekend.
